And for everybody who wants to see a lot more than the Passion Play, there is the 'Grand Tour':
Passion, Kings, and Crystals
A whole day is reserved for the arrival trip (appr 90mins from MUC and 2 hrs from Salzburg) and the Passion Play; the play starts at 2.30 p.m., with a break for supper, and ends at 10.45 at night. So be sure to have hotel beds reserved in the area, the small town of Oberammergau resembles a camp for the duration of the Passion Play, with its 4.700 audience seats in the passion play theatre.
Day 2 starts with the short transfer to the king's castles at Neuschwanstein. If you'd like to see not just Neuschwanstein but Linderhof and Hohenschwangau as well, you might want to opt for a second overnight stay, preferably in the idyllic Tyrolean region of Mieminger Plateau, the famous Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol near Telfs high above the Inn river valley, or in Innsbruck, the beautiful capital of Tyrol. A short tour of Innsbruck with its old town and some highlights of modern architecture is highly recommended.
Next stop is Wattens, 20 minutes from Innsbruck, with the famous Swarovski Crystal Worlds, a theme park around the world famous glass crystals, right at the main head quarters of the family enterprise, with plenty of shopping opportunities at the crystal store.
From Wattens the return trip to Salzburg as well as to Munich airport takes approximately 90 minutes.
